The Stongdey monastery is the second largest monastic institution of Zanskar region. It lies 18 km north of Padum on the road to Zangla. It belongs to Gelugpa sect and inhabited by around 60 Buddhist monks of this monastic order. It was founded by Lama Marpa Lotsawa, the famous translator in 1052 CE. Later on, this was taken over by Yellow Hat order and became dedicated to Je Tsongkhapa. The monastery complex has a number of temples with remnants of rich monastic legacy. On the day of 28th and 29th in the 11th month of the Tibetan Calendar, Gustor festival has been organized every year in this monastery.
