Just 15 km north of Sonamarg, Baltal exists on the shores of Sindh River. Known for its scenic views tourists prefer camping here as all gear is available on rent. This spot is also used by the Amarnath Yatra pilgrims for camping.
Many tourists readily take the 24 km trek from Pahalgam as well which lasts around 5 hours. The not so enthusiastic people prefer riding a bus which takes around 45 minutes. Though both options present verdant greens and beautiful scenery those opting for the trek are assured of breathtaking views.
A shortcut route to Amarnath Cave also starts here. Tourists first hop on a helicopter that airlifts them up to Panjtami in just 7 minutes. Thereafter, they need to cover the balance 5 km either on foot or ponies. Else it can take anywhere from 4 to 5 hours to trek the entire distance of 14 km.
Whenever the Amarnath Yatra is in progress, many Langars are set up for the benefit of the pilgrims.
