Amar Mahal Palace was built during the reign of Maharaja Amar Singh of Dogra dynasty in 19th century. It was converted to museum in 1975 and exhibits Pahari miniature, Kangra Miniature paintings along with the main attraction of golden thorn weighting 120 kg. There is a library with 25000 books and many rare art collections.

Ideally, Amar Mahal is situated on the bank of River Tawi in Jammu. The palace offers a magnificent view of Shivalik ranges and Tawi River. The palace is located adjoining the Hari Niwas Palace, erstwhile residence of Maharaj Hari Singh and now a heritage hotel on Jammu-Srinagar NH1.

Built with red sandstone, this European Castle style architecture stands imposing and stunning and carries a rich historical legacy of Dogra Kingdom. Erstwhile royal residence of Maharaja Amar Singh and then Maharani Tara Devi (Wife of Maharaja Hari Singh), the Palace was later converted to museum by Dr. Karan Singh (Son of Maharaja Hari Singh), with an objective to preserve the Indian fine arts and collections.
